Spiezia Moisturising Hand Balm

Spiezia Moisturising Hand Balm – 50ml (£16.95)

Let me start this review by shouting 100% ORGANIC!  Every single ingredient within this little green frosted jar, is certified by the UK soil association as being organic.  Welcome dear reader to my second review for the brand I had never heard of, Spiezia Organics.

You may be forgiven for thinking this is an international brand, but in fact, their home is sunny Cornwall.  All of the Spiezia products are certified organic, which makes them quite unique.  Most natural brands contain ‘some’ organic ingredients, but very few contain ALL.

“oh wow!” were the words I uttered when I first opened the lid and smelt the aroma.  It was a warm day and I could see the top layer of the balm melting in the jar.  I scooped out a tiny amount (petit pois size) in preparation to take you a photograph and upon contact of my body heat, the balm had melted.

The base and main ingredients in this hand balm are ylang ylang oil and beeswax.  Then they have mixed an infusion of sweet orange peel oil, grapefruit seed extract, petitgrain leaf oil, lavender oil, olive oil, rose geranium, apricot oil, rose flower extract, sesame seed oil, jojoba seed oil and finally wheat germ oil.  Every single one organic.

With ingredients like this, I would expect this to be a face balm.  But no, in this case Spiezia have created a moisturising hand balm.  Oils by their very nature are able to sink deeper into the skin than any water based cream, that’s why face oils work so well.  Now let’s be practical for a moment.  The ingredients in this hand balm are all oils, which may not be the most practical thing to apply to your hands if you’re about to start some paper work or require a firm grip.

So, having experimented with this product for a while, I conclude, for day time application use only a tiny amount.  Less is more. The oils melt and spread easily and widely, keeping your hands hydrated for longer than creams.  Last thing at night, apply slightly more and massage into dry hands for an intensive overnight treatment. If you’ve been over generous, make sure you rub any excess into your feet or elbows.  Don’t waste a drop.

The results are exactly what you’d want from a hand product. Highly moisturised, long lasting smooth, soft skin.  You may be detecting a little excitement in this review and rightly so I think.  100% organic and 100% Del Brown Approved!

Spiezia Organic Lemongrass and Marigold Soap

IMG_3122

Spiezia Organic Lemongrass and Marigold Soap – 90g (£7.95)

Now it’s one thing making any product with organic ingredients, but its quite another using ‘certified‘ organic ingredients.  There are many widely recognised organisations that approve organic ingredients; the main one in the UK is the Soil Association.  This gives the consumer reassurance that the ingredients used are genuinely organic.  You can read more about the Soil Association’s criterial list on their website: The Soil Association

So let me welcome Del Brown Approved readers to Cornwall based Spiezia Organics Lemongrass and Marigold Soap. Spiezia Organics have gone to the effort to get all of their main ingredients in this bar of soap, certified organic. Excluding trace elements that are naturally found in essential oils, there are just seven ingredients in this soap, six if you exclude the sodium hydroxide which is an essential part of the soap making process and is not present in the final product.

Three base oils, Olive, Palm and Coconut are mixed with three essential oils of Lemongrass, Calendula and Wheat Germ.  The small bar lathers up quickly when added with warm water and the aroma of fresh botanicals fills the bathroom whilst gently fragrancing your skin.  The ingredients are kind and gentle making it perfect for use on the most sensitive of skins.  I used this from top to toe and found it working perfectly as a beard shampoo.

The base of this soap is certified organic olive oil, organic palm oil and organic coconut oil.  Then we see sodium hydroxide or Lye, organic Lemongrass leaf oil, organic Calendula flower extract and Organic Wheat Germ Oil.

Lemongrass is used in Ayurvedic medicine for being good at relieving cough and nasal congestion, whilst Marigold (Calendula) is said to have anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-inflamatory properties.  If you suffer from mild spots on your back, chest or shoulders or have irritated skin, the ingredients in this bar may well prove beneficial.

Ingredients: Olea Europaea (Olive) fruit oil, elaeis guineensis (Palm) oil, cocos nuclear (coconut) oil, **sodium hydroxide, cymbopogon citratus (lemongrass) leaf oil, calendula officials (calendula) flower extract, triticum vulgar (wheat) germ oil, *citral, *citronellol, *geraniol, *limonene **Non organic *naturally occurring in essential oils
