A’kin by Purist Brightening Day Creme – 50ml (£28.50)

I’ve been a fan of the PureMan range from A’kin for a while, but this was the first time I’ve tried a product from the A’kin by Purist range. A’kin and Purist have a range of Australian owned and made products that pride themselves in using natural ingredients and exclude the usual suspects of questionable chemicals.

This is the daily moisturiser is called ‘purely revitalising brightening day creme‘.

The second biggest ingredient in the pot after water is Shea Butter then glycerine.  I’ve counted at least 31 ingredients including Macadamia nut oil, Olive oil and Echium Plantagineum Seed Oil which is high in Omega 3, 6 & 9 essential fatty acids.  Piroctone Olamine which is a compound used to treat fungal infections.  Titanium Dioxide which has natural UV resistant properties. Myrciaria Dubia Fruit Juice is also known as camu camu, an amazon riverside tree which bears cherry-like fruit which are exceptionally high in vitamin C.  Also amino acids in the form of Arginine and hydrolysed hyaluronic acid which is an acid found naturally in our skin.

The result is a moisturiser which keeps the skin feeling hydrated, without feeling clogging or looking greasy.  The thick textured, white coloured cream has a pleasant non-floral fragrance, which men will appreciate.  It absorbs quickly and easily into the skin leaving it feeling smooth and hydrated.

Ingredients: Water, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Glycerin, Isostearyl Isostearate, Cetearyl Olivate, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Cetearyl Nonanoate, Sorbitan Olivate, Niacinamide, Ascorbyl Glucoside, Sorbitol, Sodium Gluconate, Sodium Lactate, Phenoxyethanol, Arginine, Hydrogenated Olive Oil, Cetyl Palmitate, Allantoin, Sorbitan Palmitate, Titanium Dioxide, Olea europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Echium Plantagineum Seed Oil, Fragrance, Sodium Citrate, Xanthan Gum, Mica, Ethylhexylglycerin, Myrciaria Dubia Fruit Juice, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Piroctone Olamine, Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil Unsaponifiables, Citric Acid, Citronellol#, Geraniol#, Sodium Benzoate, Tocopherol, Linalool#, Citral#, Potassium Sorbate, Limonene#.

Natura Siberica – Rhodiola Rosea Day Cream SPF-20 – 50ml (£9.05)

So lets kick off my first review of a moisturiser with built-in natural SPF, with this offering from ‘Natura Siberica’.  I recently discovered this Russian born company whilst at the Natural and Organic trade show earlier this year.  The product is called Rhodiola Rosea Day Cream with SPF-20, for sensitive skin.

Closer inspection on a lot of SPF (Sun Protection Factor) products state ‘do not apply on the face’.  So I was in the market for a product I could use on holiday, on my face, which contained an SPF and this ticked all the boxes.

It comes in a 50ml pump, is white in colour and creamy in texture.  The smell is unusual, hard to describe accurately but has a non-offensive fragrance.  The product absorbed quickly and easily and I’m pleased to report, did not leave my face looking like Casper the friendly ghost all day.

I applied one pump (onto clean skin) of this cream every morning onto my face.  I was out and about all day and did not burn.  My skin did not react to the ingredients, broken capillaries were not inflamed and it didn’t cause me to break out in spots.  I used this exclusively as my moisturiser for the whole week and it did a good job at that too.  If you are concerned about sun spots or the effects of the sun on your skin, you should consider using a moisturiser with built in SPF all year round.

I was impressed to read on the packaging that this formulation did not contain parabens (methyl, propyl, etc.), Polyethylen Glycol (PEG), Silicones, Synthetic Fragrances, Synthetic Dyes, Glycols, Mineral Oils, EDTA, BHT-BHA or GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) Plants.

Now a final word of caution and common sense.  I tested this product whilst in Sicily in April and was not lying facing the sun for 8 hours per day.  If you’re going somewhere hot or planning on doing a lot of sun bathing, I’d suggest using a much higher factor than SPF 20.
