Friendly Soap Cocoa Butter Facial Cleansing Bar

IMG_2583Friendly Soap Cocoa Butter Facial Cleansing Bar – 95g £2.49

Followers of Del Brown Approved will already be familiar with Friendly Soaps.  This one is their Cocoa Butter facial cleansing bar.

“Wash your face with a bar of soap? Have they gone mad!  No one does that anymore.. do they?”

Consider this;  How many ingredients are there in your current face washing product, be that a cream cleanser, face wash gel or anything else you’d care to suggest.

IMG_2589

Counted them?  How many were there, six?, ten? more?  How many of them ingredients were of no benefit to you or your skin?  For example, colourings, perfumes, synthetic emulsifiers to stop the ingredients from separating in the plastic bottle.  Synthetic preservatives to stop the product going mouldy on the supermarket shelves.

So straight to the ingredients in this bar.  One third cocoa butter, one third olive oil and one third coconut oil.  That is it.  No fragrances added of any kind, no colourings and no preservatives.  Cruelty free, so no animal testing.  Vegan society approved, so no animal derived ingredients.

IMG_2586

If your face is suffering and you’re at your whits end trying to solve any number of skin conditions from itchiness to spots, then I encourage you to try something like this facial cleansing bar for just one month.  See if your skin says ‘thank you’ for not over loading it with a cocktail of synthetic ingredients.

Ingredients: Sodium Cocoa Butterate, Sodium Olivate, Sodium Cocotte, Aqua

Riad of Aromas Cherry and Juniper Berry Gentle Hydrating Cleanser

IMG_8508

Riad of Aromas Cherry and Juniper Berry Gentle Hydrating Cleanser – 100ml (£16.00)

This is my second review for Riad of Aromas, the Moroccan influenced, British brand, making a big impact on the natural product market.  Let me introduce you to their alcohol free, Cherry and Juniper Berry cream cleanser.

The airless pump helps preserve the natural ingredients, without the need for synthetic chemicals.  Dispense this naturally white, cream cleanser onto your fingers, massage all over the face, then rinse off with warm water.  Best results are achieved when used in combination with the unbleached muslin cloth, included in the box.  Rinse the cloth under hot water, ring out and wipe off.  When used like this, a mild exfoliation is achieved, resulting in your skin feeling really clean. Make up wearers should particularly benefit from this.

IMG_8516

The biggest ingredients in the cleanser are water, apricot seed oil, castor oil and sweet cherry oil.  Cherry oil is rich in vitamins A, B, D and E and full of antioxidants. Then we see plant derived glycerine, moisturising shea butter and coconut derived cetearyl glucoside.  Sodium anisate is an antimicrobial preservative derived from corn and fennel.

IMG_8511

Natural source vitamin E and juniper oil, which has antiseptic qualities to help alleviate spot prone, oily and congested skin conditions. Sage extract, sodium levulinate which is another natural preservative, peppermint oil, lactic acid, polimer in the form of carbomer and finally an ester in the form of naturally derived glyceryl oleate.

IMG_8507

Suitable for vegans and not tested on animals, this cream cleanser is a great natural alternative to the synthetic chemical packed cleansers, available on the high market.  The mix of natural ingredients breaks down oil and grime and leaves the skin feeling clean and refreshed.  Highly Del Brown Approved!

Ingredients: aqua, prunus armeniaca camellia, ricinus communis seed oil, prunus avium, cetearyl alcohol, glycerine, butyrospermum parkii butter (shea butter), cetearyl glucoside, sodium anisate, tocopherol, juniperus communis fruit oil, salvia officianalis (sage) extract, sodium levulinate, mentha piperita (peppermint), lactic acid, carbomer, glyceryl oleate, geraniol*, limonene*, linalool*

*Naturally occurring molecules.

Lyons Leaf 100% Natural Beauty Balm

IMG_3078

Lyons Leaf 100% Natural Beauty Balm – 55ml (£12.99)

Stand by your beds, I’m particularly excited about this one and rightly so when you realise the quality of the ingredients, the uses and the price! But where are my manners? I haven’t even introduced you. Del Brown Approved would like to welcome you to this 100% Natural Beauty Balm from Ben and Vicky Lyons of Lyons Leaf, Mendip Hills, Somerset.

There are twelve 100% natural ingredients that go into making this balm and 95% of them are organic or from wild harvest. No water, preservatives, colourings or perfumes. All of the oils used are cold pressed, so no heat treatments were used during their extraction, preserving the quality.

IMG_3074

The base and biggest ingredient of the balm is cold pressed wild harvest babassu oil. Babassu oil is extracted from Babassu nuts which naturally fall in the amazon rainforest.  Then we find raw organic shea butter, organic cold pressed macadamia nut oil, organic cold pressed jojoba oil, cold pressed sweet almond oil, natural source vitamin E, palmrosa essential oil, clary sage essential oil, benzoin resin, patchouli essential oil, rosemary essential oil and Lyons Leaf’s very own home grown calendula flower extract.

IMG_3075

The smoky brown glass jar helps protect and preserve the integrity of the essential oils. It houses 55ml of solid balm. If ambient temperatures are warm, the texture of the balm may be softer. The glass jar is deceptively small, on first appearance you may be forgiven for thinking ‘that won’t last long’, until you start using it. You quickly realise a little goes a long way and this jar will last you a long time.

IMG_3066

The aroma is mainly of shea butter with a faint hint of rosemary oil.  The uses of this balm are vast. I primarily used it at night instead of a serum, oil or moisturising cream. Scoop out a pea sized amount into the fingers, warm together and watch the balm melt on contact with your body temperature (see photographs), then pat and smooth over the face. Allowing the oils to sink deep into the skin and do their work whilst you sleep.

The balm can also be used as an oil cleanser, scoop out a small amount onto the fingers, then work the balm onto dry skin. Allow the melted oils to work into the pores of the face, lifting grime and dissolving dirt. With the aid of a hot cloth of your choice, remove the oil and the debris of the day, leaving your face feeling clean and moisturised.

IMG_3067

But it doesn’t stop there. Apply a small amount of this balm onto dry and cracked skin, so lips, hands, feet, heels and elbows.

I’m full of big praise for this balm.  If you’re on a budget and looking for a Del Brown Approved ‘highly rated’ multi-tasker, this would be my first choice. If you’re already a fan of face balm, oils or serums, you’re going to love the quality of the ingredients. If you’re a sufferer of skin conditions like eczema, acne, irritated skin and react to a lot of ingredients, then check the ingredients list and give this a try.

Ingredients: orbignya oleifera, butyrospermum parkii, macadamia ternifolia, simmondsia chinensis , prunus amygdalus dulcis, tocopherol, cymbopogon martini, salvia sclarea, styrax benzoin, pogostemon cablin, rosemarinus officinalis, calendula officinalis

*Essential oils naturally contain: citral, geraniol, benzyl benzoate, benzyl cinnamate, farnesol, limonene, linolool

Kale Enzymatic exfoliating cleanser from Nourish

 IMG_0591

Nourish Treatment Kale Enzymatic Exfoliating Cleanser – 50ml (£16.50)

My first product review from the British born and made skincare brand, Nourish.  This product; Kale Enzymatic exfoliating cleanser, was launched on the 1st September 2014 and is ultimately what I would describe as a face scrub.  The ingredients are so well chosen that you can also use the product as a mask and allow the properties of the ingredients to penetrate into the skin, before rinsing off.

IMG_0592

I’ve enjoyed researching the ingredients in this product as it has uncovered some fascinating findings. The main ingredients are Sweet Almond Seed Meal (meal being a coarsely ground grain). Then we find Lactobacillus, which is a bacteria, I hasten to add, a very good one! Just one of the benefits of this ingredient is that it is anti-inflammatory, great if like me your face is prone to becoming red and aggravated by harsh ingredients.  Another main ingredient is Punica granatum fruit ferment extract, which is extracted from Pomegranate. Then we find Kaolin, a natural clay and the feature ingredient being organic Kale, the superfood of the moment renowned for its high levels of vitamins A, C and K.  The list goes on to include Myrrh oil,  Rosa Canina Flower Oil and Pelargonium Graveolens Flower Oil.  An 81% organic formulation, using a cleaver botanical mix not commonly found in natural skincare products.

IMG_0815

The result is a slightly gritty, pale green coloured paste with a pleasant clean fragrance that is hard to identify. It doesn’t contain any foaming ingredients.  Apply a small amount to damp skin and massage onto the face, focusing your attention to problem areas, such as around the nose, forehead and chin.  You can leave the product on your skin whilst showering, then rinse off.  The effects are exfoliated, clean, fresh, brighter looking skin.

IMG_0589

It is described as suitable for all skin types, however, the coarse nature of any scrub may make it unsuitable for very sensitive skins. I would a advise against using any face scrub daily, instead use it as and when you feel your face is in need of a really deep down clean. Men will love using this as the packaging is gender neutral and it doesn’t have any sort of floral fragrance.  Use this scrub before shaving to open and clean out blocked pours, remove dead skin cells and prepare bristles ready for a clean cut.  Or use it as a post shave face mask to help calm and sooth the skin.

Ingredients: Aqua, Prunus amygdalus dulcis (sweet almond) seed meal*, Glycerine**, Lactobacillus/Punica granatum fruit ferment extract, Kaolin, Lactobacillus/Bulgaricus ferment filtrate, Algin, Argania spinosa kernel oil*, Griffonia simplicifolia seed extract, Prunus amygdalus dulcis (sweet almond) oil*, Hydrogenated jojoba oil, Cetaryl alcohol, Brassica oleracea acephala leaf extract*, Glyceryl caprylate, Levulinic acid, Sorbitol, Helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil*, Rosa canina flower oil*, Stearic acid, Illite, Palmitic acid, Pelargonium, graveolens flower oil*, Sodium levulinate, Aloe barbadensis leaf juice powder*, Xanthan gum, Candelilla/Jojoba/Rice bran polyglyceryl stearate, Brassica oleracea acephala powder*, Olibanum oil, Commiphora myrrha oil, Glyceryl undecyllenate, Faex (yeast) extract, Leuconostoc/Radish root ferment filtrate, Sodium stearoyl lactylate, Ananas sativus (pineapple) fruit extract, Populus tremuloides bark extract, Lactobacillus ferment, Rosmarinus officinalis oil*, Citronellol, Eugenol, Geraniol, Limonene, Linalool.

*Certified Organic. **Organic origin, Naturally present in essential oils.  81% organic ingredients

Possibly THE most natural face wash I’ve ever reviewed?

JooMo Honey & Orange Face Wash – 100ml (£6.95)

My regular followers will know how excited, passionate and enthusiastic I am about my natural products.  This is one review I have been very excited about writing.  I discovered this face wash called JooMo, designed and developed from Universities and research laboratories here in the UK.   At the moment it seems JooMo has only two products in its inventory.  A face wash for girls and one for boys.

Their mission, was to create a TRULY 100% natural product using no chemical or processed ingredients.  The result was this Jooma Face Wash.  I encourage you to take a moment to visit their website and read more on this product.  I have been using this for the past month as my daily face wash and here’s my report.

Firstly when the product arrived through the post, I was blown away by the strong orange and honey smell.  I could even smell it through the jiffy bag it was delivered in.  It smelt amazing!  As I was road testing other face washes at the time, I put this in my cupboard.  When I came to use it a month later, I noticed the orange and honey smell had gone and was replaced with a strong smell of cinnamon and clove oil.

The face wash has the texture of a runny gel, slightly orange in colour but mainly transparent.  It contains no foaming ingredients, so it doesn’t matter how hard you rub, the product will not foam or create bubbles.  Instead, the slippery texture glides over the skin, creating minimal friction.  So if you were usually red faced after rubbing face washes on your skin, this would certainly be of benefit to you.  If you’re familiar with using a foaming or cream based face wash, I encourage you to allow at least a week to get use to this non-foaming gel-like texture and routine, and to enjoy the benefits of clean natural cleansing.

Apply the invisible gel onto the damp face and enjoy washing off all the excess oil, dirt and grime of the day.  The product easily washes off with warm water leaving the skin clean, clear and feeling comfortable.  This is truly minimal fuss and effort on the part of the user and us males in particular are going to love using it.

The ingredients in JooMo are not only 100% natural but also the way they are processed is altogether better.  None of their ingredients have gone through chemical or physical changes.  On the label we see the biggest ingredient in the tube is Water, Sugar extract, sea salt and honey.  Then we find Orange Juice (yes juice not oil!), Orange Peel oil, clove oil and cinnamon.  The thickening ingredients are Guar Gum and Acacia Senegal Gum Extract.

Don’t be put off by the label stating ‘exclusively for young sensitive skin’.  I’m a man in his late 30’s and it worked great on my skin.  If only I had used this instead of that nasty bright blue bottle of anti-spot face wash I used continually for years as a teenager!  If you suffer with spots at any age or if like me, you don’t have spots but just want to use the most natural ingredients on your skin, give this serious consideration.

Highly Del Brown Approved this is sure to be a close contender in my top five face wash products of the year!

INGREDIENTS: Aqua, Saccharum Officinarum (unrefined sugar) Extract, Maris Sal (Sea Salt), Saponins, Mel (Honey), Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Juice, Cyamopsis Tetragonoloba (Guar) Gum, Acacia Senegal Gum Extract, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Eugenia Caryophyllus (Clove) Leaf Oil, Cinnamomum Zeylanicum (Cinnamon) Leaf Oil, Cinnamomum Cassia (Chinese Cinnamon) Leaf Oil, Cinnamal, Eugenol, Limonene

A daily, easy to use face wash from A’kin.  This orange, yellow colour liquid gel has a dominant aroma of spicy clove oil.

Daily face wash from Balance Me

Balance Me Pure Skin Face Wash – 125ml (£16.00)

My first review for the ladies at Balance Me, a British brand that many of you will already be familiar with, founded by sisters in 2005.

This face wash is both effortless and a genuine pleasure to use.  The tube is big, easy and practical to use.  The cleanser has a bright white, silky texture that slides effortlessly over the face.  It has a clean, fresh grapefruit mix fragrance thanks to the Frankincense, Grapefruit and Palma Rosa essential oils.  Its mild foaming action with tiny bubbles, works well as a facial hair shampoo for us men with beards.

It didn’t inflame or aggravate my broken capillaries or leave me red faced.  It rinses off easily with no need for a cloth, which I’ve never been a fan of myself and left my face feeling clean and comfortable.  No tight or stripped feeling with this one and suitable for ‘normal to combination skin’

The biggest ingredients and base for this cleanser (after water), is Decyl glucoside and Lauryl glucoside, which are plant-derived mild surfactants, often found used in baby products or in products for use on sensitive skins.  They have then used Rice Bran Oil, vegetable derived glycerin and still very high up in the list, Moringa Oil.  Other natural plant and oil ingredients found include Spruce Knot extract, Aloe Vera, Petitgrain, Ylang Ylang and Roman Chamomile.

This particular cleanser boasts 98.8% natural origin ingredients and having checked out the ingredients myself, are also fully Del Brown Approved!

Ingredients: Aqua, Decyl glucoside, Lauryl glucoside, Oryza sativa (rice) bran oil, Glycerin, Xanthan gum, Modified potato starch, Moringa oliefera (moringa) oil, Citric acid, Abies picea (spruce knot) extract, Aloe barbadensis (aloe vera) leaf extract***, Citrus paradisi (grapefruit)*, Boswellia carteri (frankincense)*, Citrus aurantium amara (petitgrain)*, Cymbopogon martini (palma rosa)*, Cananga odorata (ylang ylang)*, Anthemis nobilis (Roman chamomile)*, Benzyl alcohol, potassium sorbate, Dehydroacetic acid, Limonene**, Linalool**, Geraniol**
