Bee Inspired Natural Lip Balm

Bee Inspired Natural Lip Balm – 5ml £4.50

Some people are literally addicted to lip balms, applying them hourly throughout the day. Does this sound like you?  If so, check the ingredients to see if it contains petroleum. Petroleum based products can cause lips to dry out even faster than usual, hence the need to keep re-applying.

Petroleum is literally petrol, yes the same stuff that powers your car.  Petrol is of course a natural product, but once it has been extracted, refined and processed, it is then used in cheap synthetic cosmetics.  One downside of petroleum is that it creates a barrier effect on the skin, literally suffocating the pores where it is applied.  The jury is still out as to the possible side effects of using petroleum based products, some studies suggesting it is a carcinogenic.  All the while there is a question mark over the ingredient, I shall be avoiding it.

So if you are looking for a simple, fragrance free, quality lip balm, look no further.  This lip balm from Bee Inspired contains just three 100% natural ingredients.  Sweet almond oil, beeswax and vitamin E oil.  That’s it.  No perfumes, no colourings, no preservatives and of course, petroleum free.  Made with bees wax produced from their own bee hives, Bee Inspired create small batch products by hand, using natural ingredients and without cruelty to animals.

Not everyone wants a lip product with a fruity fragrance, so being fragrance free, both men and women feel comfortable using it.  Unlike petroleum based lip balms that just form a barrier on the skin, the natural oils and bees wax in this product penetrate deep into the skin, hydrating dry lips and making them feel soft and comfortable.

This easy to use, fuss free lip balm is a winter essential and fully Del Brown Approved!

Ingredients: prunus amygdalus dulcis, beeswax, tocopherol

‘All you need is me’ from True Organic of Sweden

True Organic of Sweden – All you need is me – 50ml (19.99)

I’ve been genuinely excited to bring you this one! It’s an ‘All you need is me’ cream from a company called ‘True Organic of Sweden”. As you’d expect from the title, but should never assume, this product is made in Sweden and uses certified organic ingredients.

As you can see from my photographs, when you squeeze the tube, incidentally made of GREEN PE (sugarcane derived), the cloudy yellow cream slowly starts to come out of the tiny hole in the tube. It’s at this point you discover the product is not a cream but in fact a balm. With little or no aroma to speak of, the balm melts on contact with your skin temperature and a little goes a long way.

The product is actually called ‘All you need is me’ and you quickly realise it’s actually true. It is described as being suitable for use on dry, flaky, cracked or thirsty skin.  Apply a small amount on the lips to make the most moisturising lip salve.  Unlike the paraffin based lip products, you won’t need to keep re-applying this every couple of minutes!  Also apply it last thing at night and wake up with hydrated lips.

It can be used on dry elbows, knees, heels, feet, finger nails, cuticles, tip of your nose and even your hair!  Yes brothers with beards, this means us too!  I have been melting a small amount between my fingers and combing it into my beard. Within minutes I’m left with a glossy, tamed, well groomed, healthy looking beard.  For those fortunate enough to have hair on your head, just think about how you could use it there too!

As this is a true multi-tasker, it’s even good for use on areas of red or irritated skin, minor scrapes or scratches, apply a small amount and allow the natural ingredients to soothe, calm and heal.

As this is oil based, the ingredients sink deep into the skin, moisturising and soothing as it goes. The squeeze tube application makes using it highly practical and with the absence of any floral aroma coupled with the gender-neutral packaging, makes us all feel comfortable about using it.

The ingredients read like a Del Brown wish list!  Mineral oil free, every single ingredient is 100% natural and 95% of them are from certified organic farming. Even the outer packaging is made of sustainable paper.  The base for the cream is Castor oil, Beeswax, Olive Oil and Shea Butter.  Then we find skin loving Vitamin E, phytochemical and antioxidant rich Blueberry seed oil, Sunflower seed oil and finally Rosemary leaf extract.

I’ve been using ‘All you need is me’ for the past month and have become an instant fan, there’s nothing about this product I don’t love.  Fully Del Brown Approved!

Ingredients (INCI): Castor Oil (ricinus communis seed oil), Beeswax (cera alba), Olive Oil (olea europaea fruit oil), Shea butter (butyrospermum parkii butter), Vitamin E (tocopherly acetate), Blueberry seed oil (vaccinium myrtillus seed oil, tocopherol, helianthus annuus seed oil, Rosemarinus officinalis leaf extract)

Whipped moisturising organic shea butter!

whipped_shea_hand_butter_lav-vitamine_30ml-1 whipped_shea_hand_butter_lav-vitamine_30ml-3

RococoChichi Whipped Shea Butter – 30ml (£3.50)

At first glance you’d be forgiven for overlooking this unassuming little tin. But unscrew the lid and insert a digit into the ‘literally’ whipped shea butter and release the infused aroma of either Lavender or Vanilla, depending on which choice you go for.   We’re not talking supermarket synthetic vanilla or lavender, we’re talking 100% natural essential oils that have been whipped together with 100% natural moisturising shea butter.

I’ve long been a fan of shea butter.  It is sourced from Africa, extracted from the shea nut and it’s fatty oil is rich in vitamins A, D and E. But this is the first time I have found it whipped together with Jojoba oil, Vitamin E and either Lavender or Vanilla oil. The result is a lighter textured, easier to use product, which not only smells good but also has a whole host of applications.

In short, you can use this anywhere and everywhere. Anywhere you have dry or chapped skin. Use it as a lip balm, rub a little onto dry elbows or knees. Use it on dry or cracked heels, rough or peeling skin, sun burn and blemishes. The lavender butter in particular is good rubbed onto insect bites. You can even use it on dry hair and that includes beards. The list is ‘almost’ endless!

The only decision you have to make is are you going for the antiseptic and antifungal properties of lavender oil, or the uplifting mood enhancing properties of natural vanilla.

The raw shea butter they use has been certified organic by the Soil Association and certified Fairtrade by the Fairtrade labeling organization (FLO). All the ingredients are 100% natural and handmade by RococoChichi in London.

Ingredients: Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba Seed Oil &Wax), Alpha tocopheryl (Vitamin E), Lavendula angustifolia (Lavender Essential oil)

Nova Scotia Fisherman Lip Balm – 9.9gm (£5.95)

Oh my goodness, just LOOK at the ingredients!  I challenge you to find a lip product with more moisturising, soothing and skin-benefitting properties, than found in this tiny pocket sized lip balm from Nova Scotia Fisherman.

If you were to spot this little chap on the shelves of your local health food shop, you’d be forgiven for not immediately identifying what it was.  But this offering from Nova Scotia Fisherman will certainly be a close contender for the Del Brown Approved! ‘best lip product of the year’ category.

Flip off the white lid and push the naturally brown coloured balm up via the inner tube at the base.  Then apply directly onto the lips.  The only down side to this design is what you do when you’re finished?  I find placing the lid on top of the product and push it back down into the tube works just fine.  Be careful not to mislay the cap!

You’ll quickly realise a little goes a long way, so this 9.9 gram tube, standing about 1 inch tall, is going to last you a very long time.  Despite being a 100% natural product, it is even able to boast a 12 month life once opened. It also has a pleasant aroma, no artificial strawberry or peppermint perfume here, which after months of opening still smells as strong and as pleasant as the day you first opened it.

Apply as required to help soothe, moisturise and help aid the healing of sore, dry or chapped lips.  Apply last thing at night and wake up still feeling the benefits, without any nasty waxy residue.

The packaging is very gender neutral and as it doesn’t look or act like a traditional lipstick, even us fellas feel comfortable getting it out in public!

Out of the 100% natural ingredients, 92.5% of them are organic.

Ingredients: Cera Alba (Beeswax), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Oil, Fucus Vesiculosus (Nova Scotia Sea Kelp), Olea Europea (Olive) Oil, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Organic Coconut Flavor, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Agave Americana Leaf Extract, Citrus Sinensis (Sweet Orange), Tocopherol (Vitamin E)

Akamuti Virgin Wildcrafted 100% Shea Butter – 40g (£3.95)

This pot of 100% organic, fair traded, Ghanian shea butter from Akamuti is an ingredient purists dream.  It has so many applications, you could replace half the bathroom cabinet with it.  Lets start with moisturising your dry bits!  Dry elbows, dry knees, dry lips.  Run a digit around the surface of the pot and apply a thin layer to relieve, sooth and moisturise dry chapped lips.

Looking for a facial moisturiser with the purist of ingredients, then look no further.  Scoop out a small amount, work it between your fingers until it melts, then apply to your face. Blueberry and Dark Chocolate Lip Balm from Burt’s Bees

Burts Bees Revitalising Blueberry & Dark Chocolate Lip Balm – 4.25g (£3.99)

This lip balm was bought as a Christmas present and sat dormant in the bottom of my cupboard ever since.  However, this week, I developed the dreaded MAN FLU, which as my brothers out there will confirm, leaves us looking and feeling like death warmed up!  One side effect of MAN FLU is of course, the delightful ‘peeling lips’.  What better opportunity I thought, to try out, test and review this lip balm from Burts Bees.

I’ll make no apology for describing the smell as unusual.  It is labelled as blueberry and dark chocolate, but I struggled to identify either.  Aside from the fragrance, the lip balm slides on easily and felt as if it was actually being absorbed, rather than creating a wax barrier on top of the skin.  Dry lips are softened and feel smoother.  I also didn’t experience any scuzzy residue around the lips half hour after application, which I have experienced with lesser products.

The biggest ingredient in the tube is Sunflower oil, Coconut oil, bees wax, caster oil and cocoa seed butter.  No artificial colours, flavours or perfumes and most importantly no paraffin or petroleum.

Ingredients: helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, cera akba (beeswax, cire d’abeille), aroma (flavor)*, ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, lanolin, theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter, vaccinium corymbosum (blueberry) seed oil, theobroma cacao (cocoa) fruit powder, ammonium glycyrrhizate, tocopherol, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract, canola oil (huile de colza), glycine soja (soybean) oil, benzyl alcohol, eugenol, geraniol, limonene, linalool *natural flavour

Burts Bees Beeswax Lip Balm – 8.5g (£4.99)

If you’re a person who thinks artificial strawberry smelling lip seals are really good, then ignore this recommendation altogether! If you love to smother your lips in Vasaline AKA petrochemicals, heed these next words of advice.. STOP IT!!  Instead, try this little tin of 100% natural goodness from Mr Burt’s Bees.

Pop open the tin, rub a digit around in circles to create a bit of heat, enough to melt the surface layer, then smooth the almost invisible natural oil goodness onto your peeling lips.

Ingredients: cera alba (beeswax, cire d’abeille), cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, prunus amygdalus dulcis (sweet almond) oil, mentha piperita (peppermint) oil, lanolin, tocopherol, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract, glycine soja (soybean) oil, canola oil (huile de colza), limonene
