True Organic of Sweden Under Cover Agent Deodorant

True Organic Of Sweden – Undercover Agent Deodorant – 50ml (£10.00)

My second review for ‘True Organic of Sweden‘, who offer a range of top quality products all containing excellent natural ingredients and perform superbly.  This ‘Undercover agent‘ roll-on deodorant is no exception.

Now on the topic of deodorants, the ingredient you want to search out and avoid is synthetic ‘Aluminium Chlorohydrate’.  Not to be confused with ‘Potassium Alum’.  Potassium Alum is a natural salt that prevents the growth of odour causing bacteria, making it an ideal ingredient to use in an under arm deodorant product.  There’s an interesting website I’ve found which goes into lots of detail about the difference between natural potassium alum and synthetic aluminium.

True Organic of Sweden have developed this aluminium and alcohol-free deodorant using 99% natural ingredients.  This base and biggest ingredient in this deodorant is Water, potassium alum, organic triethyl citrate and organic vegetable based glycerine.  Being organic we know it is naturally sourced and not synthetically created.  Then we see the only non-natural ingredient in the product, bicarbonate of soda.  Natural thickener Xanthan Gum and organic Glyceryl Caprylate are next, with parabens replaced with natural preservatives Sodium Levulinate and Sodium Anisate.  Finally we see calming organic Aniba Roseaodora Wood essential oil and antiseptic organic Cupressus Sempervirens leaf oil.

Those last two ingredients Rosewood and Cypress oil, help provide this roll-on with one of the nicest fragrances I have found in a natural deodorant product.  It smells fresh and clean and quite unlike any other product or fragrance, totally unisex, no floral notes here.

No special application method required, shake before use and apply to clean, dry skin.  For maximum benefit, allow a moment to dry before pulling on clothes.  Another thing I love about this product is the 100% recyclable glass bottle, especially if you’re concerned about the chemicals found in plastic containers.

I’ve been using this daily for the past month and love it.  Its compact size, ease of use, fresh fragrance, lack of nasty chemicals and clean packaging.  Highly recommended and fully Del Brown Approved!

Ingredients: Aqua, Potassium Alum, Triethyl Citrate*, Glycerine*, Sodium Bicarbonate, Xanthan gum, Glyceryl Caprylate*, Sodium Levulinate*, Sodium Anisate*,  Aniba roseaodora wood oil*, Cupressus sempervirens leaf oil*, Aroma from essential oils: Linalol, Limonen, Geraniol, Benzyl Benzoate

Beyond Organic Skincare Naturally Fresh Crystal Deodorant

Beyond Organic Skincare Naturally Fresh Crystal Deodorant – 50ml (£8.00)

“The trouble with natural deodorants are, they just don’t work”  Well my friends, not anymore!  I was asked to try this new 99% natural ‘Naturally fresh crystal deodorant’ roll-on by Marianna Tregoning, the founder of Cornwall based Beyond Organic Skincare.  So I have put it to the test.

It is a standard plastic roll-on bottle, which performs very well.  I say that because some roll-on’s I have tried in the past either don’t dispense enough product or end up leaking all over the place.  Not with this one.  The first thing you can smell is the fragrance of cucumbers, not surprising when you see cucumber fruit extract being the fifth biggest ingredient in the bottle.  The natural cucumber smell quickly disperses once applied and you’re left without any lingering fragrance. The liquid also dries quickly, so no delay required in pulling on your clothes.

The base and biggest ingredient in the bottle is Aloe Vera juice, followed by American witch-hazel flower water, potassium alum, a naturally occuring pure mineral salt which is the key natural deodorising ingredient, glycerin, cucumber extract, Carrageenan which is an extract from seaweed.  Amorphophallus konjac root powder, used as a natural thickening agent and has been eaten for 1500 years in Japan.  Salicylic Acid, extracted from the Willow Tree, used here as a bactericidal and finally naturally produced by plants, Benzyl alcohol.

The ultimate question is, does it work?  Can you apply this once in the morning and confidently go all day without risk of odour?  My conclusion is a resounding ‘yes’.  Be it a relaxing weekend or a stressful workday, this deodorant didn’t fail me.

The result is a product that is free from synthetic chemicals and full of skin benefitting ingredients.  The base being that aloe vera juice, which is renowned for its soothing effect on the skin.  If you are easily irritated by under arm products, suffer from sensitive skin, concerned about by the use of synthetic aluminium or like me dislike overpowering synthetic fragrances, then this is certainly comes highly recommended.

Ingredients: Aloe barbadensis leaf juice, Hamamelis virginiana flower water, Potassium alum, Glycerin, Cucumis sativus fruit extract, Carrageenan, Amorphophallus konjac root powder, Salicylic acid, Sorbic acid, Benzyl alcohol

Bionsen 100% natural total body deodorant

Bionsen Japanese Spa Minerals Deo-Total Body Anti-Odorant – 16g (£3.95)

In the search for a truly 100% natural underarm deodorant, I have been product testing this offering from Bionsen for the past two months. This Bionsen Japanese Spa Minerals Deo-Total Body Anti-Odorant consists of a clear plastic tube attached to a pump spray. Inside the tube sits seven or eight chunks (16 grams to be precise) of a naturally found mineral salt crystal called “Ammonium Alum”. Nothing else.  Now Ammonium Alum has been proven to neutralise odour causing bacteria, so the theory is, you still sweat but you don’t smell.

There are no other ingredients, no liquid, no colourings, fragrance, preservatives.. nothing.  All you have to do is fill the tube with tap water.  When first using this product, I’d suggest filling it up with water in advance to using it. Otherwise, the salts won’t have had chance to start dissolving and you’ll be spraying 100% water on your arm pits!

To use, spray onto the arm pits and allow to dry before pulling on clothes. This is where some people fall down and no wonder the product doesn’t work for them. Now this may frustrate some users, the need to allow the product to dry before pulling on a t-shirt.  If you spray too little, there isn’t enough ammonium alum salt to neutralise odour causing bacteria.  Equally, if you spray too much, it runs down the side of your body and takes ages to dry. So I have worked out 7 pumps per arm pit is the optimum amount. Make this the first thing in your morning routine, applied to clean dry skin. By the time you’ve brushed your teeth, you can pull on your t-shirt and get on with your day.

The result is quite amazing. Obviously this is not an antiperspirant, so you will continue to sweat as normal. But, no odour! Not even with your arm pits have dried out at the end of a hard working day, there’s still not a hint of body odour.

The product is very practical, especially when travelling. Pour away the water and pop this lightweight, liquid-free tube into your hand luggage, then top up with water when you arrive at your destination.  The pump can be re-filled with water up to five times, there’s even a scratch off indicator on the back of the tube to help remind you how many more re-fills you can do.

As there is no fragrance, it is completely unisex.  It has been tested for use on sensitive skins and has not been tested on animals.  The product is advertised as a total body deodorant as it can be used on the hands, feet and even intimate areas!  In principle I can’t see why not, but I’ll leave you to discovered how well it works on those areas for yourself!  Do let me know!

A natural ‘chemical free’ deodorant spray from Crystal Spring

IMG_0348 IMG_0350 IMG_0349

Salt of the earth Natural Deodorant Unscented Spray – 100ml (£3.84)

So the topic today is deodorants and antiperspirants. Firstly lets clarify the difference. A deodorant is tasked with ensuring we don’t smell. The ingredients within the product are formulated to destroy odour-causing bacteria. An antiperspirant on the other hand is designed to prevent the skin from sweating. It does this by temporarily blocking the pours that allow sweat to pass through them.

Now, equipped with that information alone, I decided years ago that I didn’t like the idea a product preventing my body from performing naturally. So I stopped using antiperspirants all together. I don’t however want to smell, so if there is a natural way I can destroy or mask odour causing bacterial in my arm pits, then I’m all for it!

Two ingredients that are regarded as ‘danger’ signs on an underarm product are ‘Aluminum’ and ‘parabens’. But, I challenge you to find an underarm product that contains parabens, as I can’t find one! You will however find aluminum, as this synthetic man made ingredient, has proven to reduce perspiration. But, it is this synthetic version “Aluminium Chlorohydrate”, which has people concerned.

Now if like me you’ve experimented with ‘natural’ under arm products and have been mortified to discovered you’re ‘less than fresh’ by the end of the day, I encourage you to consider this offering from Crystal Spring. This Salt of the earth spray is an unscented natural deodorant. The ingredients are water, potassium alum, which I’ll come onto in a moment. Organic Aloe Vera leaf juice, two types of antibacterial Honeysuckle flower extract and finally p-Anisic Acid, which has antiseptic properties and is found naturally in Star Anise.  Also important to note that this doesn’t contain any alcohol, colors or perfumes.

The main ingredient to look at here is the potassium alum.  Now this ingredient is a naturally occurring mineral salt, typically found as encrustations on rocks in areas of weathering, putting my geography A-level to good use there! The properties of this ingredient are that it has a natural deodorant effect by inhibiting the growth of bacteria responsible for causing body odour. This natural source ingredient has been used in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine for generations.

Happy with the ingredients, I put the product on test. Firstly I love the fact it is unscented. I literally hate (strong word there) the synthetic aroma of cheap underarm products, be they roll-on or body sprays.  It baffles me how people think they smell nice?  To my nose they are a cocktail of synthetic chemicals.

Applying to fresh out of the shower clean skin, the product acts, looks and feels like water. I sprayed five pumps onto each pit and allowed a few minutes for it to air dry and absorb into the skin before pulling on my t-shirt. Obviously, if you don’t allow this time, the product will just wipe off onto your clothes. Then I forgot all about it. 12 hours later and the most crucial conclusion, no body odour.

If you apply too much, the product will run down your body like water. Apply to little and you may find it doesn’t perform as well as you’d like. So perceiver and find the right application technique for yourself.  The short and long term benefits of using a natural deodorant such as this, far outweigh that of the cheap synthetic offerings from the supermarket.  The ingredients in this are far kinder to your skin and body.  Fully Del Brown Approved!

Aluminium free deodorant from Lavilin

Lavilin Bio Balance 48 hour Roll on Deodorant – 60ml (£8.40)

Are you looking for a deodorant that does not contain aluminium, no alcohol, no parabens and has no added fragrances. Lavilin, from its makers Hlavin have developed such a product.

This roll on deodorant works by neutralising perspiration odour for up to 48 hours.  It is perfume free and contains Hyssopus plant, Clove flower and Calendula flower extracts.

I’ve been testing this out for the past few weeks.  It’s easy to use, highly concentrated so you don’t have to reapply layers of it in order for it to work and, although it won’t stop you from sweating, it does prevent body odour.  My tip, shake before use and allow to dry before dressing.

The formula is also water resistant, so if you’re a keen sports man or women, this type of product is ideal.

Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Oryza Sativa (Rice) Starch, Zinc Oxide, Capryloyl Glycine, Ethylhexyl glycerin, Maltodextrin, Hyssopus Officinalis extract, Eugenia Caryophyllus (Clove) flower, Calendula Officinalis flower extract, phenoxyethanol, hydroxyethylcellulose, allantoin

I have a problem with sweaty feet? What do you recommend?

Lavilin Foot Deodorant Cream – 12.5g (£15.32)

If you suffer from sweaty feet, you’ll know that the majority of solutions on the market are sprays, most of which try to hide foot odor with a cocktail of synthetic fragrances. A glance at the ingredients reveal a list of nasty chemicals. So why not check out Lavilin Foot Deodorant Cream, as it contains no alcohol, no aluminium, no propylene glycol and is paraben free (unusual to find in a foot deodorant). It claims that with one application, it can eliminate foot odor for between 3-7 days.

Remember this is a deodorant, not an antiperspirant, so won’t stop your feet from sweating but should help them from smelling. Antiperspirants are designed to block pours to prevent you from sweating in the first place… highly unnatural and certainly not ‘del brown approved’!!

A quick look on the internet shows it has pretty good customer reviews, let me know your comments if you’ve tried it.

Ingredients: Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil & Hydrogenated Castor Oil & Copernica Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax,  Zinc Oxide, Potato Starch (modified), Talc (pharma), Triethyl Citrate, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract, Glycine Soya, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Arnica Montana Flower Extract, Tocopherol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Lactose, Milk Protein, Bifida Ferment Lysate, Fragrance, O-Cymen-5-Ol.

A gentle natural deodorant from Neals Yard

Neals Yard Lemon & Coriander Deodorant – 100ml (£8.50)

This was my first experience of using a deodorant water spray.  It has a zesty citrus smell, which makes a nice change from all them artificial scents found in the supermarket deodorants.

Don’t be spraying too many pumps of this into your arm pits, otherwise you’ll end up with water running down the sides of your body. Instead, restrict yourself to 4/5 pumps aimed at each pit.  Allow to fully air dry fully before pulling on your clothes, otherwise, you’ll have nice smelling t shirts, but would have wiped off any deodorising ingredients from the area you need it most.

If you tend to react to under arm products that irritate your skin, cause itchiness and or redness, this gentle alternative is worth a try.

Ingredients: Alcohol denat., Aqua (Water), Glycerin, Citrus limonum (Lemon) peel oil expressed*, Citrus aurantifolia (Lime) peel oil distilled*, Citrus paradisi m. (Grapefruit) peel oil expressed*, Coriandrum sativum (Coriander) fruit oil*, Eugenia caryophyllata (Clove) bud oil*, Cymbopogon martinii (Palmarosa) herb oil*, Lavandula angustifolia (Lavender) oil*, Sodium usnate extract, Citral, Coumarin, Eugenol, Farnesol, Geraniol, Isoeugenol, Limonene, Linalool.

*Organically produced ingredient. Natural constituent of essential oils listed. Made with 100% ingredients from natural origin. This is a vegan product.
