The Organic Pharmacy Moisture Cream for Men

The Organic Pharmacy Moisture Cream for Men – 75ml (£35.95)

The Organic Pharmacy, a company founded by Margo Marrone, opened her first shop on the Kings Road in London, in 2002. One of the brand philosophy’s is to ‘absolutely prohibit the use of artificial preservatives, fragrances and colorants’. So let me introduce you to this Organic PharmacyMoisture Cream for Men.

It has a naturally cream colour and a heady, masculine, slightly woody aroma. Dispense a small amount onto your fingers and smooth over the face. Less is more with this moisturiser; you really don’t need to use much. The cream quickly absorbs into the skin, leaving your face feeling hydrated, comfortable and smooth.

The biggest ingredient in this moisturiser is organic aloe vera, mixed with water, organic coconut oil, sesame seed oil, organic jojoba oil and organic shea butter.  Some of the other key botanicals found in this moisturiser include sunflower oil and Tamanu. Now Tamanu oil, from the Polynesian Islands, contains a host of neutral Lipids, Glycolipids, and Phospholipids.  More importantly used here in a moisturiser, it contains a natural anti-inflammatory.

Organic calendula has long been used to help heal a host of skin conditions. Organic St.John’s wart, anti-microbial organic propolis, natural antioxidant green tea and natural source Vitamin E.  This combination of ingredients helps to calm and repair the skin. The light texture and quick absorption makes it ideal post shave to re-hydrate the skin.

This unusually large 75ml tube should last you a long time, the industry standard is 50ml.  Its compact size makes it easy to throw into a gym bag or take away whilst travelling. It contains an excellent list of natural ingredients, including 81% organic ingredients.  This is my first review of an Organic Pharmacy product and I’m confident, this won’t be my last!

Ingredients: Aloe (Aloe Barbadensis)*, Aqua (Water) , Coconut Oil (Cocos Nucifera)*, Sesame Seed Oil (Sesamum Indicum), Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia Chinensis)*, Shea Butter (Butyrospermum Parkii)*, Ceteryl Alcohol, Parfum (Fragrance), Behenyl Alcohol , Sunflower Oil (Helianthus Annus), Glyceryl Stearate*, Sodium Lactate , Benzyl Alcohol, Alcohol, Phospholipids*, Tamanu (Calophyllum Inophyllum), Xanthan Gum, Soybean Sterols (Glycine Soya)*, Marigold (Calendula Officinalis) Extract*, Hypericum Perforatum*, Propolis Cera* , Green Tea (Camellia Sinensis), Vitamin E (Tocopherol) , Sorbic Acid, Limonene , Linalool, Benzyl Benzoate, Geraniol, Benzyl Salicylate, Farnesol, Isoeugenol, Eugenol, Coumarin,

Friendly Soap Aloe Vera Soap

Friendly Soap Aloe Vera Soap – 95g (£1.99)

Attention those of you with REALLY sensitive skin.  My ingredient purist friends among you, will particularly appreciate this one.  Those boys at Friendly Soap have done it again, but this time, using just FIVE ingredients.  This Aloe Vera soap has to be one of the purest, most natural, cleansing bars on Del Brown Approved.  Absolutely one for those experiencing irritated skin, or for anyone looking for a genuinely pure, natural cleansing bar, suitable for children!

The four main ingredients that make this soap are moisturising coconut oil, olive oil, water and shea butter.  Then the fifth and final ingredient is aloe vera leaf powder.  Aloe vera has a great cooling and calming effect on the skin, ideal for use after sun exposure.  So if you’re going away on holiday, add this to your packing list.

This bar doesn’t have any particular fragrance to speak of.  It foams up with rich, creamy bubbles, cleansing gently to leave the skin feeling clean and comfortable. This beats the so called ‘pure’ and ‘simple’ bars sold in the supermarkets, hands down.  Incidentally on that topic, click here to read my blog about the use of animal fat in supermarket soaps.

Friendly Soap‘s are not tested on animals, free from palm oil, Vegan society approved and hand made up in Yorkshire. They also don’t contain any artificial colourings, perfumes or preservatives.  Fully Del Brown Approved!

Ingredients: Sodium cocoate, Sodium olivate, Aqua, Butyrospermum parkii butter, Aloe barbadensis (aloe vera) leaf powder

Are you washing with ANIMAL FAT?

So there I was, staying in a luxury five star hotel in Berlin.  Next to the bathroom sink, sat a collection of beautifully presented, complimentary hotel toiletries.  This particular range had written, and I quote: “natural and organic bodycare” products; shampoo, shower gel, body lotion and a little bar of soap.

The label on the ‘Citrus Facial Soap’ boasts; “Made with Organic Shea Butter.  Gentle triple milled soap with vitamin E”.  So far, so good.  I opened it and was hit with the aroma of lavender and citrus.  As you can believe, I was all ready to spread the word and write a review on it.

So of course, me being me, I went straight to the ingredients list and started reading:

Ingredients: Sodium Tallowate, Sodium Cocoate, Aqua, glycerin, sodium choride, parfum, lavandula angustifolia oi, linalool, limonene, pentasodium pentetate, tetrasodium etidronate, butyrospermum parkii*, tocopherol, benzyl salicylate, citral, geranoil. *certified organic

So the biggest ingredient is Sodium Tallowate.  But what is that?  Well, I started doing some research. It turns out the ‘Sodium’ bit means it has been mixed with Lye (sodium hydroxide), but Tallowate means animal fat.

The definition of the word ‘Tallow’ [tal-oh]:

the fatty tissue or suet of animals

the harder fat of sheep, cattle, etc., separated by melting from the fibrous and membranous matter naturally mixed with it, and used to make candles, soap, etc.

So let’s start by looking at the facts.  Tallow is animal fat, it could be beef, lamb or pork.  A by-product of the meat industry, just like the feathers in your pillows and the leather on your shoes.  Tallow is not a new thing.  We have been using animal ingredients in soaps and other beauty products for donkey’s years.  Think about it.  We used to make soap from whale and seal blubber.  I’m sure somewhere in the world this practice is still going on.

Tallow can legally be classed as a natural product.  After all, it wasn’t created in a lab by mixing chemicals together.  It was merely cut off the carcass of a dead cow and melted over a low heat.

I was genuinely shocked to think I might have been washing my face with animal fat, from a bar of soap that is presented as being a natural and organic, citrus facial soap.

This revolution started me thinking, I wonder where else this ‘Tallow’ or ‘Sodium Tallowate’ might appear?

Surely not in ‘Simple – Pure soap for sensitive skin’?

IDShot_225x225-2Ingredients: Sodium Tallowate, Sodium Cocoate, Aqua, Sodium Palm Kernelate, Sodium Chloride, Glycerin, Tetrasodium EDTA, Etidronic Acid

How about ‘Shield Fresh Aqua’ Soap?

IDShot_225x225-1Ingredients: Sodium Tallowate, Sodium Palm Kernelate, Aqua, Glycerin, Parfum, Sodium Chloride, Triclocarban, Tetrasodium Edta, Tetrasodium Etidronate, Benzyl Salicylate, Linalool, Cinnamyl Alcohol, Eugenol, Coumarin, Amyl Cinnamal, Geraniol, Hydroxyisohexyl-3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde, CI 77891, CI 74260, CI 74160, CI 17200.

‘Palmolive Naturals Moisture Care’ Soap:

IDShot_225x225Ingredients: Sodium Palmate, Sodium Tallowate, Sodium Oleate, Aqua, Stearic Acid, Glycerin, Parfum, Sodium Chloride, Pentasodium Pentetate, Pentaerithrityl Tetra-di-t-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, Sine Adipe Lac, Olea Europaea Oil, Aloe Barbadensis Gel, Benzyl Salicylate, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Citronellol, Coumarin, Limonene, Linalool, CI 77891, CI 47005, CI 61570

So friends, it’s about time we all started facing facts.  We are being bombarded by advertising and marketing.  We need to ALL be clever consumers and start reading the ingredient labels and understand exactly what goes into the making of products we purchase and use.

Del Brown Approved (the ingredient scrutiniser) is ALL about the ingredients, not about the packaging or misleading marketing.  Click here to read my reviews of soaps that qualify for being Del Brown Approved and DO NOT containing any animal derived ingredients

Botanicals Radiance Serum – White Grape and Avocado

Botanicals Radiance Serum – White Grape and Avocado – 28g (£25.95)

Welcome to Botanicals, a range of natural products using soil association certified, organic ingredients.  Cruelty free, suitable for vegans, made here in the UK and founded by Wendy Stirling.

This is their Radiance Serum with white grape and avocado.  Serums are a mixture of essential oils within a base oil.  The base oil is the carrier and the biggest ingredient in the bottle.  Face oils or serums by their very nature, are able to penetrate the skin far deeper than any cream moisturiser.

I’m going to start this review by declaring my absolute love for it!  As you know with me, it’s ALL about the ingredients, so lets start with that.  The biggest ingredient in the bottle is organic apricot oil.  Most of the big brands use olive oil as their carrier, as its cheap and widely available.  Apricot oil is a natural anti-inflammatory when applied topically, so if you’re face is looking red, irritated or inflamed, this oil is perfect.

The second ingredient is organic sunflower seed oil, then organic grape seed oil, organic rosa canina fruit oil, organic jojoba oil and organic avocado oil.  All five of these organic oils are renowned skin softeners and moisturisers.  Together, they create a cocktail that can help diminish the appearance of scars, lighten pigmentation, re-hydrate dry skin and even reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

Then we see organic evening primrose oil, organic camellia sinensis leaf extract, natural source vitamin E, organic lavender oil, organic chamomile oil and finally organic mandarin orange peel oil.  Every one of the ingredients in this list are there to serve a purpose or tackle a skin concern.  Another big plus for me is that every ingredient is organic.  None of the plants from which the oils have been extracted, were grown using chemical pesticides, fertilisers or were genetically modified.

I’ve been using this for over a month and have found it help heal spots quickly, calm red irritated skin and rehydrate dry skin.  There are several ways of using a face oil in your routine.  You can use it on its own, replacing a cream moisturiser. Apply a couple of drops onto your fingers and smooth it into the skin.  If your skin is feeling particularly dry or you’ve got some skin issues you want to tackle, apply one drop in with your moisturiser, combine, then apply.  Suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and even oily.

If you’re a bearded brother, apply one or two drops onto your fingers then work into your beard.  Less is more in this scenario.  This will not only give your beard a glossy look and feel, but will also nourish the hair and skin.

Very easy to use, quick, simple and very effective.  I love the 99% organic ingredients and feel my skin is reaping the benefits.  Highly recommended and totally Del Brown Approved!

Ingredients: Prunus armeniaca (apricot) kernel oil*, helianthus annuus seed oil*, vitis vinifera (grape) seed oil*, rosa canina fruit oil*, buxus chinensis (jojoba) seed oil*, persea gratissima (avocado) oil*, oenothera biennis (evening primrose) oil*, camellia sinesis leaf extract*, tocopherol***, (lavendula angustifolia (lavender) flower oil*, anthemis nobilis (chamomile) flower oil*, citrus nobilis (mandarin orange) peel oil*, geraniol**, limonene**, linalool**. Friendly Soap Lemongrass and Hemp Soap

Friendly Soap Lemongrass and Hemp Soap – 95g (£1.99)

In general, from the people I speak to, it seems the favoured ‘washing’ product of choice, is shower gel.  But for those who suffer from some sort of skin irritation, we need to first look at what ingredients are in your cleansing products.  I encourage you to go and count the number of ingredients that are in your current shower gel and consider this, Lemongrass and hemp soap from Friendly Soap.

This soap is made up of just five main ingredients.  No SLS, no synthetic perfumes, colourings or preservatives.  The base ingredients in this soap are olive oil, coconut oil, water, shea butter and finally the genuine, natural, sweet citrus aroma of lemongrass oil.  No synthetic lemongrass aroma here.  Finally, hemp leaves are crushed and mixed into the soap to provide a natural exfoliation.

Out of all of the friendly soaps I have reviewed so far, I found this to be one of the most foamy.  So, while this soap makes an excellent all round body soap, leaving the skin feeling clean and smelling fresh, it also whips up to make an excellent shaving cream.  A sharp blade glides effortlessly over the skin, negating the need for separate shaving gel.

Lemongrass is not only a culinary herb, often used in Chinese cooking, but did you know, Lemongrass has also been found to have anti fungal properties.  Ideal for daily use, with a mild citrus lemon fragrance, both men and women will love this.  I maybe wouldn’t suggest this for very sensitive skins or children, as you may find the hemp leaves a little too scratchy on the skin.

Thoroughly Del Brown Approved and a new personal favourite!

Ingredients: Sodium olivate, Sodium cocoate, Aqua, Butyrospermum parkii butter, Cymbopogon schoenanthus (lemongrass) essential oil contains citral, geraniol, limonene, citronellol, Cannabis sativa

Riad of Aromas Cherry and Juniper Berry Gentle Hydrating Cleanser

Riad of Aromas Cherry and Juniper Berry Gentle Hydrating Cleanser – 100ml (£16.00)

This is my second review for Riad of Aromas, the Moroccan influenced, British brand, making a big impact on the natural product market.  Let me introduce you to their alcohol free, Cherry and Juniper Berry cream cleanser.

The airless pump helps preserve the natural ingredients, without the need for synthetic chemicals.  Dispense this naturally white, cream cleanser onto your fingers, massage all over the face, then rinse off with warm water.  Best results are achieved when used in combination with the unbleached muslin cloth, included in the box.  Rinse the cloth under hot water, ring out and wipe off.  When used like this, a mild exfoliation is achieved, resulting in your skin feeling really clean. Make up wearers should particularly benefit from this.

The biggest ingredients in the cleanser are water, apricot seed oil, castor oil and sweet cherry oil.  Cherry oil is rich in vitamins A, B, D and E and full of antioxidants. Then we see plant derived glycerine, moisturising shea butter and coconut derived cetearyl glucoside.  Sodium anisate is an antimicrobial preservative derived from corn and fennel.

Natural source vitamin E and juniper oil, which has antiseptic qualities to help alleviate spot prone, oily and congested skin conditions. Sage extract, sodium levulinate which is another natural preservative, peppermint oil, lactic acid, polimer in the form of carbomer and finally an ester in the form of naturally derived glyceryl oleate.

Suitable for vegans and not tested on animals, this cream cleanser is a great natural alternative to the synthetic chemical packed cleansers, available on the high market.  The mix of natural ingredients breaks down oil and grime and leaves the skin feeling clean and refreshed.  Highly Del Brown Approved!

Ingredients: aqua, prunus armeniaca camellia, ricinus communis seed oil, prunus avium, cetearyl alcohol, glycerine, butyrospermum parkii butter (shea butter), cetearyl glucoside, sodium anisate, tocopherol, juniperus communis fruit oil, salvia officianalis (sage) extract, sodium levulinate, mentha piperita (peppermint), lactic acid, carbomer, glyceryl oleate, geraniol*, limonene*, linalool*

*Naturally occurring molecules.
