Riad Of Aromas Avocado and Chamomile Body Cream

Riad of Aromas Avocado and Chamomile Softening and Soothing Body Cream – 100ml (£11.50)

I discovered ‘Riad of Aromas’ whilst at the professional beauty show in London earlier this year. Their range of Moroccan inspired products are designed for people with sensitive skin.  Their entire range is made without synthetic chemicals such as parabens, petrochemicals, alcohol, SLS or artificial colours and fragrances.

So to this, my first review from the range and this is their Avocado and Chamomile Softening and Soothing Body Cream, particularly suitable for dry, distressed and sensitive skin. 100% of the ingredients in the pot are from natural origin and is suitable for Vegans.

How about body cream, which incidentally I’ve found works just as well as a hand or foot cream, where the greatest ingredient is water and Avocado oilAvocado oil is naturally high in vitamin E, antioxidants, monounsaturated fatty acids and Sterolin.  Studies have shown Sterolin to facilitate the softening of the skin and reduce the appearance of age spots.

The third ingredient is Apricot oil, moisturising shea butter and Jojoba oil.   Then we find glycerine, cetearyl alcohol and cetearyl glucoside three vegetable based emulsifiers and fatty acids derived from plant oils.  Then we find Chamomile, which has long been renowned for its anti-inflammatory, calming and soothing properties.  Geranium, Lavender oil and natural source vitamin E.  Finally at the end of the ingredients list we see sodium anisate, sodium levulinate, glyceryl oleate, lactic acid, four ingredients I have looked into and have no concern over.

The cream has a non-specific natural aroma and is quick to absorb into the skin leaving it feeling smooth and moisturised.  Unlike some creams, this one doesn’t feel at all sticky or greasy.  Even if you were to over apply and use too much, the cream sinks rapidly into the skin leaving it looking matt, not shiny, primarily thanks to the second biggest ingredient Avocado oil.

Ingredients: aqua, persea gratissima (avocado) oil, prunus armeniaca (apricot) oil, butyrospermum parkii butter, simmondsia chinensis seed oil, glycerine, cetearyl alcohol, cetearyl glucoside, matricaria chamomilla (chamomile) flower extract, pelargonium graveolens oil, lavandula angustifolia oil, tocopherol, sodium anisate, sodium levulinate, glyceryl oleate, lactic acid, Citronellol*, Geraniol*, Linalool*.

*Naturally occurring molecules

Suitable for Vegans. Not tested on animals. Contains nut oil.

Beyond Organic Skincare Naturally Fresh Crystal Deodorant

Beyond Organic Skincare Naturally Fresh Crystal Deodorant – 50ml (£8.00)

“The trouble with natural deodorants are, they just don’t work”  Well my friends, not anymore!  I was asked to try this new 99% natural ‘Naturally fresh crystal deodorant’ roll-on by Marianna Tregoning, the founder of Cornwall based Beyond Organic Skincare.  So I have put it to the test.

It is a standard plastic roll-on bottle, which performs very well.  I say that because some roll-on’s I have tried in the past either don’t dispense enough product or end up leaking all over the place.  Not with this one.  The first thing you can smell is the fragrance of cucumbers, not surprising when you see cucumber fruit extract being the fifth biggest ingredient in the bottle.  The natural cucumber smell quickly disperses once applied and you’re left without any lingering fragrance. The liquid also dries quickly, so no delay required in pulling on your clothes.

The base and biggest ingredient in the bottle is Aloe Vera juice, followed by American witch-hazel flower water, potassium alum, a naturally occuring pure mineral salt which is the key natural deodorising ingredient, glycerin, cucumber extract, Carrageenan which is an extract from seaweed.  Amorphophallus konjac root powder, used as a natural thickening agent and has been eaten for 1500 years in Japan.  Salicylic Acid, extracted from the Willow Tree, used here as a bactericidal and finally naturally produced by plants, Benzyl alcohol.

The ultimate question is, does it work?  Can you apply this once in the morning and confidently go all day without risk of odour?  My conclusion is a resounding ‘yes’.  Be it a relaxing weekend or a stressful workday, this deodorant didn’t fail me.

The result is a product that is free from synthetic chemicals and full of skin benefitting ingredients.  The base being that aloe vera juice, which is renowned for its soothing effect on the skin.  If you are easily irritated by under arm products, suffer from sensitive skin, concerned about by the use of synthetic aluminium or like me dislike overpowering synthetic fragrances, then this is certainly comes highly recommended.

Ingredients: Aloe barbadensis leaf juice, Hamamelis virginiana flower water, Potassium alum, Glycerin, Cucumis sativus fruit extract, Carrageenan, Amorphophallus konjac root powder, Salicylic acid, Sorbic acid, Benzyl alcohol

Natural Empathy Top to Toe wash

Natural Empathy Top To Toe Wash – 200ml (£12.00)

IMG_2629 IMG_2632

This is my second review for Natural Empathy, this time their ‘Top to toe wash’ for all skin types.  As the name suggests, this shower gel is designed for use both on the body and hair.

If you’re a lover of shower gels that foam, then this one is for you.  The foaming agents found in this bottle are naturally derived, avoiding the use of synthetic skin irritant sodium laureth sulfate.  The fourth biggest ingredient is Aloe Vera, then we see Quillaja Saponaria, more commonly known as Chilean Soap Bark.  Now Chilean Soap Bark is as you’d expect, extracted from an evergreen tree, native to central Chile.  The application of this ingredient are vast and it has been for hundreds of years.  It is used in this shower gel for its natural foaming properties.

Cold pressed extra virgin rapeseed oil is the base oil to which Lavender, Cedarwood and Patchouli essential oils have been infused.  Finally a couple of natural preservatives (no synthetic parabens here) and natural source vitamin E.

The gel is clear thanks to no added colourings and it quickly foams up when added to water.  The natural cleansing and foaming agents leave the skin feeling clean and fresh and the blend of essential oils has created a primarily lavender fragrance, leaving the skin faintly scented.  The fragrance is clean and fresh and is a pleasure to use. I’ve been using this as a body and beard wash, highly successfully I hasten to add!

Ingredients: Aqua, Caprylyl Capryl Glucoside (naturally derived surfactant), Cocomidopropyl Betaine, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera), Xanthan Gum (natural viscosity agent), Quillaja Saponaria (Chilean soap bark), Brassica Campestris (cold-pressed, extra virgin rapeseed oil), *Juniperus Virginiana (Cedarwood), *Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender), *Pogostemon Patchouli (Patchouli), *Natural Parfum, Citric Acid, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Tocopherol (naturally derived Vitamin E) (*denotes 100% organic essential oils), **Citral, **Citronellol, **Coumarin, **Eugenol, **Geraniol, **Limonene, **Linalool (**from essential oils)

Surya Brasil Sapien Men Shaving Cream

Surya Brasil Sapien Men Shave Cream – 200ml (17.00)

This is my debut review for Surya Brasil. Founded in Brasil in 1995, this mother and daughter business have based their ingredients on Ayurvedic and organic living.  I was fortunate enough to meet and introduced the company founder Clelia Angelon to Del Brown Approved in 2014, she was keen for me to try out this shaving cream for myself. I’ve been using their Sapien Men Shave Cream for months as the 200ml tube is SO big!

I’m going to start by describing this as a shaving ‘gel’ rather than a ‘cream’.  Formulated using ingredients found in the Amazon rainforest and natural botanicals from around the world.  This shaving gel boasts being certified 100% vegan, 98.81% of the ingredients are from natural origin, 13.73% of which are certified organic by EcoCert.

The base of the shaving gel is a mixture of natural emulsifiers, foaming agents, high concentration of organic aloe vera leaf juice, coconut derived cleansers and lubricating emollients.  Then we see orange, cedarwood, bergamot and clove oils mixed with macadamia nut oil, rich Cupuaçu butter sustainably harvested from a nut from a tropical rainforest tree, properties similar to that of shea butter.  Then Malpighia Glabra, a potent antioxidant tropical fruit.

IMG_3063 IMG_3083

The primary task of a shaving cream or gel should be to assist the smooth glide of a sharp blade across the skin.  The gelatinous texture, thick viscose gel has a light natural orange hue and an unusual exotic aroma.  It looks, smells and acts unlike most shaving products I’ve ever used.  Starting off thick and semi transparent, the gel doesn’t bubble up giving you a face full of synthetic foam.  Instead it builds a naturally lubricating cream that sits comfortably on the skin, allowing the razor to glide effortlessly without clogging the blade.

The cleaver use of natural ingredients leaves the post shaved skin feeling moisturised, comfortable and smooth.  The masculine fragrance of cedarwood, bergamot and clove, also leaves the skin slightly scented and fresh.  An unusual and unique product that is a pleasure to use and thoroughly Del Brown Approved!

Ingredients: Deionized Water (Aqua), Decyl Glucoside, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice*, Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Cocoamidopropyl Betaine, Glycerin, Sucrose Cocoate*, Benzyl Alcohol (and) Dehydroacetic Acid, Dehydroxanthan Gum, Citric Acid, Xanthan Gum, Citrus aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Oil, Cedrus Atlantica (Cedarwood) Bark Oil, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia Fruit Extract (and) Eugenia Caryophyllus (Clove) Leaf Oil, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil*, Theobroma Grandiorum Seed Butter*, Dextrin and Malpighia Glaba Fruit Extract* and Saccharomyces Lysate Extract.

Nova Scotia Fisherman Fundy Clay and Mint Soap

IMG_2652 IMG_2650 IMG_2657 IMG_2651

Nova Scotia Fisherman Fundy Clay and Mint Soap – 136g (£5.95)

How about a bar of soap, made from 100% natural ingredients, packed with skin benefitting ingredients that maintains its natural mint fragrance right the way to the end of its life! Well look no further. Say hello to Nova Scotia Fisherman’s ‘Fundy Clay and Mint’ Soap.

So what is Fundy clay? Fundy clay is Kaolin Clay, sustainably harvest from the Bay of Fundy located west of Nova Scotia in Canada. Nova Scotia Fisherman has combined this clay with organic Castor Oil that has been infused with Nova Scotia Sea Kelp (Fucus Vesiculosus). Sea kelp is a renowned super food, high in iodine, vitamins A and C and a source of calcium. It is also a natural detoxifier, antioxidant and has cell regenerating properties. The sea kelp, known as bladderwrack gets its nutrition from the 100 billion tons of sea water that flows in and out of the Bay of Fundy every day.

The base ingredients of this soap are cold pressed olive, sustainable organic palm and coconut oil. Then we find the kelp infused organic castor oil, soy oil and organic shea butter. The long lasting fresh fragrance is courtesy of peppermint oil, spearmint leaf oil and peppermint leaves. You can actually see little parts of the mint leaves within the soap right the way through it, not just on the surface. Finally in the ingredients list we find Kaolin Clay, lavender oil and natural source vitamin E.

Nova Scotia Fisherman soaps are hand poured using 100% natural ingredients, no synthetic colourings, fragrances or preservatives. The oils in the soap are all cold pressed maintaining the natural properties of the ingredients.

I am a huge fan of the Nova Scotia Fisherman soaps as they are full of skin benefiting ingredients, long lasting and easy to use. Use this bar all over the body, including your hairy bits (I’m talking beards!). This soap quickly foams up with warm water and leaves your skin feel clean, fresh and silky smooth after use. That long lasting fresh minty scent is both uplifting and refreshing.
